I am an Investigator in the Section on Islet Cell and Regenerative Biology at Joslin Diabetes Center and an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. My laboratory studies the molecular causes of diabetic embryopathy. We developed a mouse model of diabetic pregnancy and have delineated several biochemical processes in the embryo that are perturbed by excess glucose metabolism, preventing induction of genes that are required for normal embryogenesis, and have demonstrated how abnormal embryo gene expression leads to malformations. Recently, we established new mouse embryonic stem cell lines under physiological glucose and oxygen conditions. These cell lines replicate the metabolic and molecular responses of the embryo to normal and excess glucose exposure in a dish.
